How to Damp Proof Your Basement
The first step in damp proofing your basement is to identify the source of dampness. Depending upon the source of dampness, there are three different techniques commonly used for solving damp problems: exterior drainage, interior drainage and interior sealants.
Exterior Drainage
Exterior Drainage involves lining the exterior walls with waterproof polymers to stop water from reaching the foundation walls. This solution isn't always possible, for obvious reasons exterior walls can be difficult to get to and this isn't a good solution if the damp is getting through from underneath the property.
Interior Drainage
Interior drainage is a common solution and involves lining the interior basement walls with waterproof membranes. When water seeps into the property through the foundation walls and the floor, the membranes prevent the water from getting into the property and drainage and pumping systems are installed to take the water out.
Interior Sealants
Not a permanent solution, interior sealants can help with stopping low levels of moisture and are good for preventing humidity from absorbing into the walls.
